Chris and I have not worked on any projects for that period of time and I suspect that it could be the end of 'RC Wood Creations'. I have not heard from Chris since I was laid off, so I suspect that he is no longer interested in working on anything or I figure that I would have heard from him by now stating otherwise. It's too bad really, I enjoyed the time we spent working together on projects.

So, I will be shutting down this blog site over the next two weeks as I no longer have anything to contribute to it nor the desire. I have moved on to better and more positive things and you can now find me at:

newagainedm.blogspot.com (New Again Furniture).

Thanks for the ride and maybe I'll see you on the other side.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7228511831909745467.post-21850353340493056492010-08-20T23:29:00.003-06:002010-08-20T23:51:34.449-06:00Amazing Dissappearing Blog PostsI have no idea if it is against blog etiquette to remove blog posts from a blog or not? If you are a regular reader of this site, you may notice that some items are missing from the most current updates. Well, there is a reason for that.

Things seem to stall quite a bit at RC for various reasons (and not just the fault of the men behind the scenes). While Chris and I are still working together on RC Wood Creations, we have not given up our day jobs in order to primarily pursue this project. This translates that we work together when we find the time. So things don't always move as fast as people assume it should.

Chris and I used to work together in the same company, but for the past few years, we had both moved into different areas of the company. Eventually, my area of the company started lay-offs because of the recession and I was eventually one of the casualties. But finding myself unemployed and with lots of free time did not mean that Chris could share the same luxury. It's now been three months since that has happened. I had a chance to figure out what I want to do with my future now that it has taken a new turn.

But having all that free time meant that I was able to tackle some wood projects of my own that Chris couldn't be involved in. The projects were successful but were being done with a different business model in mind. At first, I just posted the new projects on this blog site as I went along not really concerned about how it would look to the outsider. However, this was a misrepresentation of the works as they were not actually a product of both Chris and myself. So, when I wrote about them, I never mentioned Chris as being a part of any of them. This made him look absent and that simply wasn't the message I was trying to convey.

The solution? Separate the projects as they should have been in the first place. This way, RC Wood projects are still a collaboration of two friends and the solo work was given a new home so it could be treated equally but separately. The new home of the solo projects I have worked on myself can now be found at:

http://newagainedm.blogspot.com

I call my other business project 'New Again' Furniture. Make sure you stop by and check it out. But keep RC bookmarked because there are still more good things to come.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7228511831909745467.post-50693443909339280772010-06-27T18:14:00.004-06:002010-06-27T18:25:07.079-06:00Smaller Playhouses Have Arrived!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJuD4dGdeWal58_XzQlFvlQcGU6ukgrk83MolOHBykxbxXvBaGkvEBZ5MiZrdZ4aRvG_CVowM3GPAagcAWobiLf13Yd42P0oahZUOcOQc42TheeBQFTpnbMoabafr1VALuS_gCl26z/s320/June+002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5487613584741100690" />

The smaller playhouses are finally in the production phase. Although the original model will still be available (4X4X4), these new units have lost a foot making them easier for families with smaller dwellings. Not everybody has a large room to put these units in so we decided to make two sizes available.

We have also upped our design quality making these units much more attractive than the original ones we were producing. The only drawback is that they DO take longer to produce, but that's a good thing. It's worth it in the end.

We will keep you posted as to how the new units are progressing. For now, I have included a sneak peek at an unfinished unit. The only new secret we will reveal at this time is that the new units have a chalkboard surface inside so children can design their own furniture and other assorted artwork to decorate their house. This was something we had never included before.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcP9pj9-Y0QUjywffihavjnNmoJNqwz4sDuGAN67ekDmo0abtki8s49RsOoOpx4AJSlST-QcoZ97JSU-18mpwOdT8VrnQovdFib8OzCyOae6z9hNdeyHNxfW_ZrTFMmVYPwfbpPmaU/s320/June+001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5487613776152888466" />

I hope you are as excited as we are about the finished products.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7228511831909745467.post-73614045026789964482010-06-07T19:53:00.002-06:002010-06-08T08:21:22.672-06:00When Life Throws You LemonsNot much has happened here lately. I spent the last two weeks putting up a new fence, which, I have to say, turned out really well. Not bad for a first attempt. Chris gave me a quick lesson on what I needed by helping lay out the string lines and to stand the first 7 posts. So, that was definitely a big help.

But in the last two weeks, I was laid off from my job of 8 and a half years, the place Chris and I both work. Chris is still there, however, but that's good for him because he is happy with what he does and they still seem happy with him. I, on the other hand, have not decided what I plan to do with myself yet. Actually, that's not totally true. I have an idea.

So, hopefully things will get rolling again with 'RC Wood Creations' soon. If not then it's definitely been an interesting ride.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7228511831909745467.post-79799096618280658132010-04-22T21:21:00.002-06:002010-04-22T21:27:56.318-06:00Very Busy Again!Chris and I have been busy plugging away at some more playhouses. We decided to make these units smaller, as I had mentioned in an earlier post. I suspect that they will be more popular in the new size. However, we will still keep the older model size available if any one wants a custom one.

I have also been working on refurbishing an old coffee table to make it match the telephone table I whipped together in the new year. The table was so successful that I decided to keep the momentum going. I'll try to post pictures when I have completed the project.

Other projects that are still on tap? Fireplace screens (more on that later), a digital media player (basically, still the plan of building a computer controlled music player), an arcade machine (still in the very early stages), a dollhouse design and even to continue to re purpose old furniture. Some of these projects are with Chris and some of them are personal affairs. Either way, I hope to see some successes this year.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7228511831909745467.post-38887125382109534842010-03-10T21:09:00.005-07:002010-03-25T10:09:29.947-06:00The Traditional Cub CarThere is a reason why I am showing you a picture of my dirty Dodge Magnum.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMaWywhmZP_FsC29ahOrksTy61lC6EbRf5FpIVhsX-wywz_PY-lDc5cW9xeqYYQbTf0y4JCsEY_IHK20JmPrqaaDMGPSS4tslLj-KXxXd80TW0DFikjxaQeNFX2-DO4cglauNiD9Ec/s320/101_0972.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5447223876118058642" />
My oldest son recently came home from his Cub Scout meeting and announced that he needed to build a 'Cub Car'. For anyone not familiar with what this is, I'll explain it. The Scouts are given a box which contains everything you need to build a 'Cub Car'. The outside of the box is decorated with professional advertising, obviously remaining unchanged since the 1950's and inside this box are 4 wheels, 4 metal pins, an instruction manual and a block of pine. The block of pine is unfinished in almost every way except for two small grooves located where the wheels will go.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIktClJ_QSx7jT3r2We33H4IL_l-Zk7OSN60KniZjMW5b-2vWSYbM9sXcst9aQO9VWJIbYyEzO5sivkJSAsRgFnBOL96pu2VT97P36Wx4wYs4TORUyLjOOSiML2Q88000wNwxHq6xS/s320/101_0970.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5447224988732727874" />
The trick is to make the block of wood look like a car.

There are certain regulations and proper measurements you must adhere to when designing your car or it can be disqualified. Chris has been working hard at building some new models of the playhouses we currently sell. These units are a tad bit smaller than the originals and we are finally rolling out some new designs. I hope to have some pictures online ASAP.

We are going to try and set up our first booth at the local school that my youngest son attends. The theme? Home Based Business Fair. We will be setting up a table, if everything goes on schedule, to showcase our talents to the public. It will be happening on March 25, 2010 and is in conjunction with the Lymburn elementary school on the west end of Edmonton.

It's going to be an exciting evening for us. Hope to see you there!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7228511831909745467.post-5200613555418640412009-12-27T10:02:00.002-07:002009-12-27T10:22:31.167-07:00Another Hiatus Leads to More BrainstormingWell, this year has been a slow one for us. I have tinkered around with a few ideas lately but haven't put anything into actual motion. So far, this year, we moved one playhouse, built a few laptop stands which are still sitting in storage and I built a desk for my son (see previous post).

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFlPl3hJH6gDxhTla1JURlPY5RHLMR1kEG9ZJ5rA9zyNTpV0RbWHm339HB62ZUE0SE89QogAne1E2MGDMjlubEVMumowrAGM4RuYMC9-wjQSY04gcvo2Xbicyi02Yzjk8hgLojUWCw/s200/110-1008_IMG.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5419967512911820274" />

However, I looked back at the idea of building a retro jukebox computer cabinet for my family room in the summer because I have always wanted a jukebox. Even though it would only play digital media files and not actual records, it still would've served it's purpose. The ironic part about all this is that I just recently stumbled across other craftsmen who are already building something that is similar to what I was designing (without prior knowledge of what they had been doing). The item I am talking about is something called a 'Mame' cabinet. 'Mame' is an acronym for a front-end program that allows you to play old school arcade games on your PC. There is also other front-end type programs that will give the PC an exact feel of an arcade machine if that is the sole purpose of that machine. The front-end software also doubles as a jukebox program which is what I was really trying to do in the first place.

Not only did I find the plans available for free to build the basic cabinet, there are also plenty of accessories available to add that finishing touch to your project including joysticks and coin slots. I ran the idea by Chris and he seemed very enthusiastic about the whole idea. During my Christmas holidays, I'm going to sit down and work out the details and see if this is a feasible project for the new year and if it would be something that people in Edmonton would be particularly interested in. If not, Chris and I would both like to build one for each of us and use them to show off our talents.

I'll update on this as things progress.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7228511831909745467.post-89587592739819748212009-09-15T20:05:00.006-06:002009-09-15T20:16:02.631-06:00Installing a Desk Under an Existing Bunkbed<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfahwKinJ-LS-rweJEDisGEdn7RpmNlthEDdFIWg3NjF8mhnoDJ-daUyyP0NS7vWKAUhUB9XAPU6ZbbBoHCxE6EBxh_zYFjtRLDDnMAciQkk8jifZvVJjFy1KYjQy3-A0j8r5ZUj2d/s320/Picture+015.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381883272743884434" />

My oldest son had requested a desk for his room. Unfortunately, his room is not very big and that is even further hindered by his 'Loft' bed. What I had noticed about his bed was the potential to build underneath it. So, I decided to build a desk right into the bed frame itself, not only with the most minimal use of lumber, but to also utilize wasted space off the floor.

Basically, this project consisted of nothing more than a few cut pieces of 2X4's, a nice piece of laminated pine for the table surface and a couple of metal brackets to secure the whole thing together. The desk worked perfectly and my son couldn't have been happier. I even built him his own functioning computer out of parts I had in the garage. That's the one thing about computers, it's never too young to start teaching them about computers in this day and age. Just make sure you lock down the internet access like I did.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGiwBlfyi4EsNjshys-3uqkNEM1Wb8GwrO7KLLeWZkRIjVWjy9tvcxxDFuXCQY7Q-vJj1jzRLAzl_UoDRkWkesML4-XCUji2w0Pp9ORAkx_ldH1nd-KuJXFMxBQ3qz-tapmJY1hxd7/s320/Picture+016.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381880826691121890" />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7228511831909745467.post-54292771010380021272009-09-15T19:55:00.002-06:002009-09-15T20:00:12.517-06:00The Green Apple Playhouse<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMJGs4ZV68SS5ESy-3ljqO_I9jSQrexmGpx_2i_hYADd-Xhl8fjIyGNjluAHVjehwSsdQ00zGRlTYlQLZexQf_cLDZ2E49zQy0JqiqFivCNITRsj3ywiZyBuc-QjjD1LWoEa7TgF-c/s320/101_0643.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381878519526901666" />

The Green Apple Playhouse was completed last week and the lady who bought it was very excited to receive it. It was a purchase for her year old granddaughter as a Christmas gift. She had nothing but amazing things to say about the unit and told me that I shouldn't give up on the concept. She thinks I could go far with it. I was just glad to have another satisfied customer.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7228511831909745467.post-44232876055003276702009-08-23T16:36:00.004-06:002009-08-23T16:56:20.404-06:00Laptop Stands and Playhouses<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZ74d1ZjMa8xvwFE8jxEgkj8d6gTkhRP05yAaEgHnCkjf8bYZ0tOwJNhbj02FfBSYeZCG_Ufy_MZGk1KnGL1mAw0g2KgC4HrWT4Y1tca6xRSYSuKyxEVk_dFpBECdLG-L3kcFlcAZV/s320/Picture+017.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5373294446415528098" />

I have been very busy working on some new design ideas, mostly in time for the Christmas holidays. Although sales of playhouses are much lower in the off-season, we are still selling units for birthdays and post-holiday gifts. It's just good to know that there is an interest in the units.

Some new projects for the fall are portable laptop stands, possibly a dollhouse design (loosely based on the large playhouse model) as well as a children's wooden bicycle concept. I hope to have the laptop stands moving before the back-to-school season starts. The rest of the new product ideas will hopefully be in production by October if things go as planned.

On a more ambitious project, I have been looking at larger scale amusement style designs, such as 'Skee Ball' tracks and 'Air Hockey' tables, but I am not sure about those two things.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2ujiFXEZS8HD-beVr3BRR6a9I_zO7mUgF_qXTiY2Rwg18mDQEo3LZoZmM2Ac6SbFDNm5845IvxrmijqlI3s0-zo9SF_mWZS8mW49xBr7PlAHV_6_Wy51LAmbOakDRZEa86nFbq7xq/s320/Picture+013.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5373294226614404466" />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7228511831909745467.post-27122536544237297292009-07-11T14:04:00.004-06:002009-07-11T14:16:08.096-06:00Updates About RC WoodWell, I haven't posted anything new in quite a while. Things have been very busy outside of the business.I have been out of town quite a bit lately for work and haven't had much time to work on anything. And when I am home, I'm trying to buy a new car and build a fence.

Chris has also been very busy with family and fence building as well.

However, that still hasn't stopped me from coming up with new and creative ideas. Recently, I built my oldest son a new desk for his Ikea bunk bed which is integrated underneath the frame. Ikea has left the bottom open for space to do with it as you will and my son has been asking for a desk for a long time. I basically used some 2x4's and a nice piece of pine for the table top. I'll post a picture when he cleans up his room.

I have also been working on a new tabletop laptop stand design. It's basically made out of MDF and is a 'one size fits all' kind of unit. It assembles and dissassembles in seconds making it completely portable. And it's small enough to fit in you laptop bag. I have decided to make them in different colours and designs to fit all tastes. It also lifts the laptop up to allow the vents underneath to breath. I have a photo of the design available below. Note that this is the unpainted version in the photos.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjugejveqlxR16-NhoHWMy81EJGzjYgfiFVSs9njiZ41x4gviJFlH9FJFJcaD54EUm8HedMc76Sl0Mkk5P54vvOcMuerJ7L9VZuWD0mRLo1FRHuVajyFx49N7nhPwceUwvgSuJxIt9D/s320/101_0338.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5357298367447308466" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCzfA035k6bVUJ34D1FinXiz7cZBBetZFqkKimjXgavkPLfzMyjbpz37IH6GJEpBln3ny8HVwC0pyrk-M3pLXjA1AcTTll23uR2llCmKcluU8JM6nQ6SPgwuZKo8gieHuA7hD7XFp5/s320/101_0339.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5357298564223889618" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhj4a7sZWxqrJsqIIALPHYYXCxYQDh-QcyJB08b027Vf7nYQfJGmk2wVBVhrr1gAOhkzFeyLWuUPnGiuv30UzTblvSBGTV9tfsSmn63Y6Ns9mrQaytTTfgxu-lFgBlnNOTrTxRa5Mw0/s320/101_0340.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5357298736699685090" />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7228511831909745467.post-64640760513719263792009-05-18T21:47:00.002-06:002009-05-18T22:01:40.349-06:00Jukebox Replica Computer Case Revisited.I have finally come back to the old design I had in mind of building a media computer system in a custom case that looked like an old fashioned jukebox. I pulled out the old plans and reworked a few numbers here and there to see what needed improvement. I also picked up most of the lumber I needed to start building the unit.

I am taking on this project as a separate thing completely. RC Wood is actually not connected to this as a partnership project. However, if this winds up being a successful product, RC Wood may adopt the design for future duplication if there is any sort of demand for it. This is something I intend to pick away at all through the summer months when I am not busy building other projects.

I will most definitely post photos of my progress as I go along. I have no photos as of yet because I spent today mostly building some 'awesome' new sawhorses out of 2 by 4's (and I mean awesome).

Here is a picture of the cabinet I plan to design from. It's a Gabel and I really like the look of it.

http://www.jukebox-world.de/Forum/Archiv/Gabel/Gabel-Aristocrat.htmAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7228511831909745467.post-79755071916201769032009-05-13T20:36:00.004-06:002009-05-13T20:48:54.260-06:00Belated Updates
Well, we built the puppet theatre and it sold at auction for about $70.00, which isn't too bad considering the turnout for the event was only about half of the people that had come the year before. It still went to a good home and that's just fine with me. The event still raised about $500.00 overall.

I had mentioned a little while back that I was going to try to restore an old camper trailer and update the interior to give it a new life. Well, it didn't happen. Unfortunately, the more digging I did into the trailer's innards, the more problems I continued to find. After working out the numbers on what it was going to cost to fix it, it wasn't worth it. However, someone else picked it up off of me and is going to give it a go. I wish him good luck and hope he has a better go than I did. I was just glad to get my driveway back.

I have also pulled out my old plans for that computer cabinet that looks like a jukebox I had been working on a while back. I've decided to tackle that project throughout the summer and take my time with it. I want it to look as sharp as it possibly can. I'll keep the blog updated on the progress with that project.

Other than that, it's been a quiet month at 'RC'. A shameless plug I have is that I have opened a new blog site unrelated to this one called 'Alberta Found' which I hope will be a success. In all my travels in my professional career, I tend to find a lot of old buildings or cars and so forth and decided to start documenting them for the entertainment value. Most times, the lots I am working on have these old landmarks on them that will probably soon be demolished to make way for new things. So, check it out if you have time.

http://www.albertafound.blogger.com/Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7228511831909745467.post-30241265718360622052009-04-06T21:56:00.002-06:002009-04-06T22:05:11.997-06:00A New Website!Well, Chris and I have finally put a new website online. I just used one of those predetermined free web services that are available to make it easier to get our feet wet. The new website link is:

atgcreations.webs.com

We have also changed the name of our business from the 'RC Wood Creations' to 'Against the Grain' Custom Wood Creations. But I probably won't make that adjustment on our Blogger site to keep it from getting confusing.

We have also finished assembling our first puppet theatre for the silent auction this weekend. I will post a picture of it as soon as I take one. The paint is still drying as we speak and I still have to put the curtain in. I suspect that it is going to be a very successful item at this year's auction. We figure, if this works out, we'll make sure that we continue to donate units when we can to other charity auctions in the future.

Well, we have finally had some nice 10 degree celcius weather this week and it doesn't look like it is going to change anytime soon. The snow is melting faster than I would ever had expected. I think this is definitely going to be a great summer for us.

Till we blog again.....Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7228511831909745467.post-57517702704345083432009-03-15T20:53:00.003-06:002009-03-15T21:08:35.739-06:00Better Late Than Never!
Wow! We have been very busy lately, which is typical for both Chris and myself. But as the title says, better late than never! We have had a few projects on the go as of lately. I have finally started renovating the interior of my old trailer to give it a much needed upgrade. The wiring was all bad (old aluminum) and some of the ceiling has suffered hidden rot. So it will take time. Chris and I have already started building a new privacy wall inside, not only to upgrade the original design, but to esthetically reinforce the ceiling. I'll post some pictures on here when the unit looks more presentable.

Old RV trailers weren't the only thing on the agenda. We have been busy building more pre-designed playhouses just in time for spring. And we are also working on our first, foldable puppet theatre stage which will get it's unveiling at a local charity function as the grand prize. We couldn't think of a better way to introduce ourselves to the public than to donate our first puppet theatre to a charity function (silent auction). We will make sure we keep everyone posted on how much money it helped raise and maybe some information about the children who win it if possible.

Everyone stay healthy and safe during these tough economic times. We know that they can't last forever!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7228511831909745467.post-84584979351047778622009-01-07T23:35:00.002-07:002009-01-07T23:39:03.126-07:00Positive Site AdjustmentsJust wanted to let everyone know that we have been cleaning up and improving the RC Wood Blog site recently. I hope everybody had a good holiday season. Chris and myself certainly did. And I must say, the playhouses did pretty good considering we took our first chance at selling them and just put them out there. On the left hand side, you can see one of the models we built custom this season. It was a barn for a little guy with a farm-themed bedroom. We also built a unit with the colours of a log cabin for another customer, and she chose to finish it up herself. Everyone seemed very happy with the units and we were just happy to be able to build them. Our next focus is to build a gas station for another bedroom theme. We also hope to be able to unveil some new designs for the upcoming year and make them visible on the blog site.

We are also getting to work on a new website this year. Since neither of us knows a lot about making websites, I cannot guarantee when it will be available to the public. So for the time being, we'll just keep updating this site with anything new that comes along.

One personal project that I worked on during the holidays was a lockable cabinet for a Nintendo Wii game system that Santa so graciously brought us this year. And since my sons are a bit too young to be trusted with the Wii when my wife or myself are not around, I built a cabinet to keep them out and to keep the system organized. I had originally built myself a stereo cabinet into the wall when I renovated my family room. The cavity in the wall had initially been used as a firewood storage box. A good idea for it's day but we had found that we never used it for that purpose. Since it originally had doors on it, we had a tendancy to shove junk into it that we didn't want to deal with. When I renovated, I wanted an in-wall stereo unit so I built a new cabinet to fit the hole.

On the left side of the cabinet at the bottom, you can see where there is a door with a small cabinet lock. When I initially built the stereo cabinet, I left this area unfinished knowing that eventually, we would be putting a game system of some sort in there. So, for the time being, I stored old record LP's in the opening to give it a finished look. When I found out about the Wii, I got to work getting the dimensions of the unit online and built a seperate box that 'slid' into the empty cavity. Now there is a place for the machine, the accessories and the games.

However, just after I took these photos, I pulled the cabinet out and did some upgrading to it so you can't see all the wires in the background anymore (and I dusted all the components). I also removed one shelf to make more room for the existing appliances.

Another thing that I hadn't planned for was that the Wii will flash it's disk drive with a pulsing blue light when it has a message or has recieved some sort of upgrade. Since the door on the Wii cabinet is solid, I would never see this feature unless I happenned to open the door. So I installed a small clear plastic lens (or the 'jewel' as I refer to it) that is level with the Wii's disk drive into the door. If the drive lights up, it also lights up the 'jewel' on the door so I know that it is flashing. The 'jewel' catches the light from behind and reflects it through the door to me. I will post new photos of the revamped design as soon as I can.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7228511831909745467.post-71371774978851969042008-12-14T09:43:00.004-07:002008-12-14T10:28:47.732-07:00Playhouses Abound!Well, another winter and holiday season has come upon us! Chris and I have been very busy with our own personal projects as you have seen in our earlier blog posts. My fireplace and family room renovation went really well and Chris' basement renovations went even better.

With the holidays coming up, we decided that we should probably get our playhouses advertised online before we missed the season. We had actually started building these units last November, but due to personal obligations of various sorts, we had put the playhouse units on hold indefinitely. Anything we had already finished was stored away in my garage as well as any unfinished units we also had. During the summer, we had a big neighborhood yard sale and I set up the completed models. Many people showed interest, but no one tried to snap anything up. That was okay because I tried setting the price a little high just to see what would happen.

So we decided to advertise what we had at the beginning of December and we were in for a big surprise. The inquiries about the ready-made units was more than we had ever imagined. Our ad had generated at least 500 hits and we not only sold the units that we had already built, we recieved orders for about 4 more. We set them at an introductory price of $100.00 each (painted). That seemed more than reasonable to us and apparently everyone else as well. Since we had been out of the playhouse building racket for almost a year, it was tricky to get back into it again. But Chris and I have made a deal that we will keep going now and to not let other obligations stand in the way (within reason of course). It's been really good and invigorating to be building and designing again.

The last year hasn't gone without some productivity however. We were still designing and planning other wood projects that were not neccesarily related to playhouses. We hope to unveil some of those things as soon as we get something built. Probably after the Christmas rush.

If we don't blog again until after the holidays, everyone stay safe and have a good season. We will definitely see you all again in the New Year.

Rob and ChrisAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7228511831909745467.post-56301888158918456422008-12-04T22:29:00.006-07:002008-12-04T22:49:16.981-07:00

Finally three months later we are finally done, and putting the finishing touches on our new space. We are very happy with how it all turned out, and now we spend most of our spare time down here. We have dubbed our new home theatre "the armory". And the kids love their new playroom. You will note that there are no pictures of the playroom posted yet, due to the extreme mess my kids have made. Thats ok, its what the room is for.
It was alot of work, and I just about gave up a couple times. I was lucky to have the constant support and encouragement of my wonderful wife. Together we got through it. I keep telling people that I will never take on such a large project again, but I am already getting the itch to start something else. I guess when you are so busy for so long, you don"t know what to do with yourself when you are done. It looks like the playhouses are about to really take off, so those will be the next projects on the go. It will be good to get back to where it all started. Seeing how much my kids enjoy their playhouse every day really makes me want to give other kids the same opportunity.Chris Pennockhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13129826283469336131noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7228511831909745467.post-23072022320161161552008-12-04T22:25:00.004-07:002008-12-04T22:29:01.404-07:00

Almost there, after several delays. This is my side door closet area. And just to note; it's not that we are a messy family, it's just that there is nowhere to put anything. So this weekend I am whipping together a really basic closet organizer to help alleviate this major disaster. It's definitely nothing fancy and to tell you the truth, is completely made out of scrap lumber I have stored in my garage. I'll post the final project on here when I get it installed.

This time it's about using scrap material in order to solve a problem and not so much about aesthetics.

On a completely different topic, I spent some time also assessing damage control on our old camper trailer. We've only had the unit for about 2 years from a family friend who gave it to us for free (pretty sweet deal). However, the trailer is also just about 40 years old and time has not been so kind to it. But once I got into the nooks and crannies of the unit, I came to realize that it mostly just needs some cosmetic upgrading.

The reason I mention any of this on the site is because Chris and I were talking about how much of the unit could be rebuilt to make it more practical. This could involve rebuilding or redesigning some of the cabinets and crevices and even installing new lighting and enhanced features such as a radio, tv and other assorted low voltage accessories that are available today. Basically, we would like to take an old trailer and make it into a modern one without taking away from it's original look and design too much. If we could pull something like that off, who knows where future projects could take us? Is it possible to flip trailers?

The best part about this project is that much of it CAN be done during the winter months as most of the work would be interior. However, my wife does not agree that we should restore it because our minivan is not designed to pull it. As it stands right now, we can't take it anywhere unless we get someone else with a truck to pull it for us. She's convinced that we should sell it for whatever we can get and buy ourselves a tent trailer that we can store in our yard in the winter. It is more practical because we CAN pull it with our van, but a tent trailer is not nearly as rugged or waterproof. Anyone care to comment?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09292647303403369959noreply@blogger.com0
